Draw in 5 steps

Step 1: ACTION LINE
When you start drawing a cartoon character it is best to start out with the action line. I am drawing a  female squirrel who is holding an acorn. She is standing up so the action line will be verticle

Step 2: BASIC SHAPES
The basic shapes of the squirrel are the head. Draw it like a circle. The body, draw it like a pear shape. The fluffy tail, draw it like round shape. The paws of rodents are always a bit wider than other cartoon animals. So Draw them wider. The feet are quite big. In the face we draw the basic shape of the snout as an oval and the cheeks. On top of the head of the squirrel you draw the basic form of the hairs.

Step 3: GUIDELINES
When you draw a squirrel or any other cartoon character it is good practice to draw the head as a globe. Draw in guidelines on the face. The squirrel is looking to the right, so draw the guidelines on 3/4 of the right side. You can also draw the guides for the small ears on top of here head.

Step 4: DETAILS
When you have finished drawing the basic shapes of the cartoon squirrel you can add the details. You have a great structure for adding your details to your drawing. On top of the basic shapes you can now fill in the details, such as the eyes, nose, lips and hairs. On the body add the hands and nails.

Step 5: RENDERING
Now you have finished the drawing of the cartoon squirrel you can render it any way you want. You can ink it with a pen or brush with Indian Ink or a sharpie. You can also color it with watercolors, acrylic paint or even oil paint. When you start coloring and rendering your drawing always keep in mind where the light comes from.
Here you see the finished piece of the cartoon squirrel in color.
